5 Reasons Your Leadership Team Isn’t Stepping Up (And What You Can Do About It)

Here are five reasons your leadership team might be stuck in neutral — and how to shift them into gear.

They Don’t Know What ‘Good’ Looks Like

Leaders need clarity.
What does success look like in their role?
What decisions are they trusted to make? What’s theirs to own?

🛠️ Fix it: Set crystal-clear expectations. Define what leading looks like in your context — not just on paper, but in practice.

They’re Waiting for Permission

Even experienced leaders second-guess themselves. If you’re still jumping in, course-correcting, or solving problems for them — they’ll keep waiting for you.

🛠️ Fix it: Step back more than feels comfortable. Let them stretch. They might wobble — but they’ll learn.

They’re Not Aligned Around a Shared Goal

You’re scaling. Things are moving fast. But without a common purpose and direction, people protect their own turf instead of pulling together.

🛠️ Fix it: Create shared ownership. Use offsites, coaching, or facilitated sessions to align around vision, values, and team goals.

They Fear Getting It Wrong

Perfectionism, past knockbacks, or a fear of blame can all paralyse action.

🛠️ Fix it: Build psychological safety. Celebrate bold thinking. Share your own mistakes. Make “failing forward” part of your culture.

You’re Still Carrying Too Much

This one stings a bit. But if you’re always there to catch the ball — no one else learns to throw.

🛠️ Fix it: Ask yourself: What am I still holding that someone else could own? Then coach them to run with it.
